The Project
The VARSUL project (Linguistic Variation in the Southern Region of Brazil) has as its general objective the description of spoken and written Portuguese from socioculturally representative areas of Southern Brazil. It has a partnership with four Brazilian universities: Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Federal University of Santa Catarina and Federal University of Paraná.
The project consists of: VARSUL Database and VARSUL Digital Sample.
VARSUL"s purpose is to offer: (i) subsidies for the description of spoken and written Portuguese in Brazil; (ii) conditions for testing and developing linguistic theories; (iii) conditions for training new researchers; (iv) subsidies for educational programs, promoting knowledge and respect for language varieties.

VARSUL DATABASE
Comprised of 288 interviews from urban areas, Banco VARSUL is distributed equally among four cities in each of the three states in the southern region of Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Flores da Cunha, Panambi and São Borja), Santa Catarina ( Florianópolis, Blumenau, Lages and Chapecó) and Paraná (Curitiba, Pato Branco, Londrina and Irati). It is a linguistic and sociocultural database for phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon and discourse studies.
Access contentVARSUL DIGITAL SAMPLES
Comprised of audio excerpts (between 5 and 15 minutes of speech), the Digital Sample VARSUL consists of 40 interviews: 24 from the capitals of southern Brazil (8 from each capital), 8 from Banco Monguilhott and 8 from Banco Brescancini and Valle - the last two, representative of non-urban areas of Florianópolis.
